In the Valley Adventure: 7 Things to do in Crested Butte for SB2K17

March 01, 2017

We'd like to think we created Chopwood Mercantile as a refreshing find in the world of 'outdoor' retail—based on the motto 'Live your Passion'.

We are taking our decades of mountain retail and merging it with the concept of a 'public house' along with a little bit of old-school friendly mercantile. It's not just about buying "stuff". Come in, strike up a conversation and share your passion for getting out there and living life.

We began by looking outside retail for inspiration, including the craft brewing movement, farm-to-table, know your farmer, food trucks and other retailers who are focused on making connections with their customers through social gathering.

Our goal is to take the fear out of discovering the right outdoor clothing and gear by making our store a welcome and enjoyable experience. To introduce the community to better and emerging designs, brands, and products that combine form and function for a great day (or night) outside. And to greet each day as yet one more opportunity to get out there with our friends and family.

We curate everything we sell with our guests in mind. But they are also the products and brands we ourselves use, wear and most importantly—love.

Our store is easy to find at 120 Elk Avenue in Crested Butte. Click here for hours and more

March 1st and our minds go straight to Spring Break. Spring skiing usually consists of sunny days and corny snow. It's been a little different this year. Fingers crossed for more pow for the spring break forecast and ample amounts of Crested Butte crazy good times. It's tough to fit everything in when you come to Crested Butte and one of Chopwood's missions is to help you feel at home and that kind of local knowledge to ease your mind a little bit. 1 epic week and 7 things to not miss this Spring Break 2017:

7. Early Coffee Run on Elk Ave

Elk Ave is like the Michigan Avenue of CB. While it's slammin' and jammin' during the afternoon and dinnertime, the early am is the time to hit it. Wake up, take a peaceful walk up or down Elk and enjoy its simplicity. You're on mountain time after all.

6. Catch the Town Bus

Photo/Mountain Express

They're FREE. Let me repeat, FREE. A free ride up to the resort, to the grocery store, to the movies, to Chopwood, it's all free and you don't have to park...which you'll understand why that's a big deal when you arrive.

5. Spring Skiing at Crested Butte Mountain Resort

It's why most of you come after all. Spring skiing is a blast. Sun or powder, Crested Butte is one of the raddest mountains to ski. Spring skiing is going to be all time this year. Local tip: don't attempt to go up the T-Bar unless you can easily ride it and ski the front side of the mountain in the afternoon sun. It's sweet.

4. Après Outside

Butte 66, The Eldo, The Brick Oven, The Last Steep, are just a few options. Hit the slopes hard then enjoy some afternoon sun and a cold beer. If your good time rolls into the evening hours, check out Travel Crested Butte's Top CB Drinks and see if you can check off a few. A FEW.

3. Try Something New

Nordic skiing, dog sledding, a massage, the kid's museum, some music at The Center for the Arts, take advantage of our funky little mountain town. Do something different, get out of your comfort zone, and have fun. Leave the egos at home and dive in.

2. 3-Way St. Patty's Party!

We've partnered up with Mountain Standard and Travel Crested Butte to throw a kickoff party. We're stoked to carry a new brand and our TCB friends are always up for a good time. Friday, March 17th (St. Patty's Day) we'll have our doors open for a good time. Swing in! Snacks, cheer, coffee, giveaways, whatever you need!

1. Chopwood Mercantile, of course

Nice plug, huh? Well naturally we'd love to see you. We'll have new spring lines in, always a plethora of local goods, and a few smiling faces...and probably a dog or two.

Crested Butte's a special place. Take advantage of a week away from the real world and enjoy things the Crested Butte way. Bare with the locals as it's one of the busiest weeks all year, and we'll do our best to make sure it's a SB2K17 not to forget. Cheers and see you the 17th.
